# Chapter 55 — Reproduction and the Environment

Why does the frog chorus start in May and not November? Why does a good beech year fill the woods with [seedlings](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/9-from-seed-to-plant#prop-g2-from-seed-to-plant-cycle), and a cold wet June empty next spring’s pond of froglets? The last chapter built the mechanism of the next generation; this one plugs it into the world: reproduction is timed, provisioned — and limited — by the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components).

## 55.1 Timed by the seasons

**Proposition 55.1 (Breeding follows the calendar of plenty).**

[Species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) time their reproduction so the *young* arrive when [conditions](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions) and food will serve them ([Proposition 38.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/38-life-through-the-seasons#prop-g6-life-through-seasons-conditions)):

- the blue tit lays so its chicks hatch at the spring [caterpillar](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) peak ( [Example 19.4](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/19-food-chains#ex-g3-food-chains-three) ’s oak chain, timed to the day);

The cues that start the machinery are the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components)’s own signals: lengthening days above all, warmth, rain.

**Example 55.2 (The indoor lambs).**

Sheep breeders exploit the cue directly: ewes come into breeding condition as days *shorten*; kept under artificial long-then-shortened [light](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions), a flock can be brought to lamb for the profitable early market. The machinery reads [light](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions), not calendars — change the [light](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions) and the calendar follows. A cue known is a lever.

## 55.2 Provisioned by the habitat

**Proposition 55.3 (Reproduction is paid for in matter).**

[Eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born), [milk](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born), nectar, [seeds](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#prop-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-transform) and antlers are all *production* in [Definition 41.4](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/41-matter-from-food#def-g6-matter-from-food-production)’s sense — [organic matter](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/40-plants-are-producers#def-g6-plants-are-producers-matter) the parents must first acquire. So the [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat)’s richness sets the budget:

- a well-fed hen lays daily; a starved one stops — the ledger of [Problem 41.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/41-matter-from-food#pb-g6-matter-from-food-1) balancing on the [egg](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) line;
- the beech [fruits](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#prop-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-transform) massively only in “mast years” following good growing seasons — [seed](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/9-from-seed-to-plant#def-g2-from-seed-to-plant-seed) [crops](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/43-producing-our-food#def-g6-producing-our-food-farming) are banked summers ( [Example 40.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/40-plants-are-producers#ex-g6-plants-are-producers-pantry) );

**Example 55.4 (Counting the tits’ clutch).**

Nest-box studies show blue tit clutches tracking the [caterpillar](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) supply: rich oak woods, ten or more [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born); poor gardens, six or seven. The bird does not decide this with a ledger — her body’s condition, built from the [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat)’s food, sets what she can provision. Clutch size is [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) quality, written in [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born).

## 55.3 Limited by the world: populations

**Definition 55.5 (Population).**

A *population* is all the individuals of one [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) living in one place — the pond’s frogs, the wood’s beeches. Reproduction adds to it; deaths and departures subtract; the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components) sets the ceiling.

**Proposition 55.6 (Why populations do not explode).**

Every [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) over-produces — thousands of [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) per frog pair, thousands of [seeds](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#prop-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-transform) per beech ([Proposition 23.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#prop-g4-animal-reproduction-strategies)) — yet ponds are not solid with frogs. The surplus is spent against the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components)’s checks:

- *predation* — the herons and dragonfly larvae of [Example 23.8](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#ex-g4-animal-reproduction-pondcount) ;
- *food and space* — only so many [caterpillars](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) , nest holes, patches of [light](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions) on the forest floor;
- *[conditions](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions)* — late frost on the blossom ( [Exercise 16.9](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#exo-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-9) ), drought on the [tadpoles](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-frog) ’ shrinking pond.

On average, in a steady [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat), each pair replaces itself — the balance of [Proposition 34.6](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/34-food-webs#prop-g5-food-webs-balance), seen from the parents’ side.

**Example 55.7 (Two springs at the pond).**

Spring 1, mild and wet: high water, early [insects](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/14-sorting-living-things#prop-g3-sorting-living-things-groups) — thousands of [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born), hundreds of froglets, the [population](#def-g8-reproduction-and-environment-population) climbs. Spring 2, a drought: the pond shrinks to a puddle, [tadpoles](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-frog) crowd, [oxygen](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/46-what-is-respiration#def-g7-what-is-respiration-respiration) falls ([Proposition 48.3](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/48-oxygen-in-the-water#prop-g7-oxygen-in-the-water-drains)), herons feast on the concentrated shoal — a handful of froglets. Same frogs, same mechanism, two verdicts: the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components) countersigns every generation.

**Remark 55.8 (Humans move the checks).**

Most human effects on wildlife run through these checks, not through the core mechanism: drained ponds and grubbed hedges remove breeding [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) ([Proposition 11.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#prop-g2-where-animals-live-loss)); pesticides empty the [caterpillar](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) peak the tits timed for; garden nest boxes and the restored wet meadows of [Example 30.10](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#ex-g5-biodiversity-storks) add ceiling back. Protecting a [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) in practice means protecting the [environment](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components) its reproduction is plugged into — cue, budget and checks together.

**Method 55.9 (Auditing a population change).**

When a [population](#def-g8-reproduction-and-environment-population) rises or falls, audit in order:

1. *timing* : did the cue and the resource peak still coincide? (a too-early spring can strand the chicks after the [caterpillars](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) );
2. *budget* : what did the season’s [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) let parents provision?
3. *checks* : which changed — predators, food, space, [conditions](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions) ?
4. *[habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat)* : was breeding ground itself gained or lost?

**Exercise 55.1 ★.**

Why does the blue tit lay when it does? Name the rule and the cue.

Ewes’ breeding machinery is started by shortening days; artificial lighting replays that signal on the breeder’s schedule, and the flock lambs early. It proves the timing is read from the cue itself — change the [light](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions), and the “calendar” obeys.

**Exercise 55.8 ★★.**

Timing: cue and spawning were normal — no mismatch. Budget: parents provisioned normally — thousands of [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born). Checks: all three tightened — the drought shrank space and [oxygen](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/46-what-is-respiration#def-g7-what-is-respiration-respiration), crowding starved, herons concentrated their hunting. [Habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat): the breeding pond itself nearly vanished — the decisive line.

**Exercise 55.9 ★★.**

A warming climate brings oak [caterpillars](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) two weeks earlier, but the tits’ day-length cue is unchanged. Predict the mismatch and its audit line.

**Solution of Exercise 55.9.**

The chicks hatch to a feast already over: [caterpillars](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) peaked while the day-length cue still said “wait”. Fledging falls though weather, budget and predators are kind — the audit’s timing line fails: cue and resource peak no longer coincide.

**Exercise 55.10 ★★.**

“The codfish’s millions are not wasted — they are spent.” Defend the sentence with [Proposition 55.6](#prop-g8-reproduction-and-environment-limits).

**Solution of Exercise 55.10.**

The millions are the strategy: each [egg](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) is a stake played against predation, hunger and [conditions](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions), and the checks collect almost all of them — that is the plan, not its failure. On average the survivors replace the parents; the spending *is* how an uncaring strategy buys its few winners ([Exercise 23.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#exo-g4-animal-reproduction-7) said it first).

**Exercise 55.11 ★★.**

Which check does each human action move: draining a marsh; hanging nest boxes; spraying the orchard against [caterpillars](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#ex-g2-animals-grow-up-butterfly) in May; restoring a wet meadow?

**Solution of Exercise 55.11.**

Draining a marsh: removes breeding [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) — the [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) line. Nest boxes: add space — easing that check. May spraying: empties the food peak — the food check, at the worst moment. Connect three chapters in one paragraph: the strategy line ([Proposition 23.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#prop-g4-animal-reproduction-strategies)), the pyramid’s losses ([Example 41.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/41-matter-from-food#ex-g6-matter-from-food-pyramid)), and this chapter’s checks — as one account of why the pond is not solid with frogs.

**Solution of Exercise 55.12.**

The frog sits at the many-and-uncared end of the strategy line: thousands of cheap [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born), no guarding. The pyramid’s arithmetic guarantees most tadpole-matter must feed the pond’s [consumers](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/34-food-webs#def-g5-food-webs-roles) rather than become frog — each floor passes on only a fraction. And the checks are where that arithmetic is enforced: predation, food, space and [conditions](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions) collect the surplus each season, leaving on average a pair to replace a pair. The pond is not solid with frogs because the strategy plans for losses, the pyramid prices them, and the checks collect them.

## 55.5 Problem: The Nest-Box Ledger

**Problem 55.1.**

Weekend problem — ten years of blue tits, audited box by box

A school monitors twenty nest boxes for ten years: laying dates, clutch sizes, fledglings per box — beside the weather log and the groundskeeper’s diary.

**Part I — Reading the normal years.**

1. Years 1–4: laying in late April, clutches of eight to ten, most [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) fledging. Name the cue that sets late April, and the peak the timing aims at.
2. Year 3’s clutches ran a [egg](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) or two larger after a warm caterpillar-rich May in year 2 — the parents wintered well. Which proposition does the correlation illustrate?
3. Even in good years, about a fifth of [eggs](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/8-how-animals-grow-up#def-g2-animals-grow-up-born) never fledge. List the checks likely responsible, from [Proposition 55.6](#prop-g8-reproduction-and-environment-limits) .
