# Chapter 56 — Puberty

Somewhere between about nine and sixteen, every human body rebuilds itself: the second growth burst of [Remark 15.3](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#rem-g3-stages-of-life-bursts), and much more than height. [Remark 32.2](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/32-human-reproduction#rem-g5-human-reproduction-adults) promised this chapter years ago. Here it is — the facts, the timetable’s famous unfairness, and the machinery, which will hand us a discovery bigger than [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) itself: the body has a second communication system.

## 56.1 What changes

**Definition 56.1 (Puberty).**

*Puberty* is the stage in which a child’s body becomes an adult’s — above all, an adult’s in [Chapter 54](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/54-sexual-reproduction#ch-g8-sexual-reproduction)’s sense: the reproductive organs mature and begin producing *[gametes](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/54-sexual-reproduction#def-g8-sexual-reproduction-gametes)*, and the body takes on its adult form. It is the biological core of [adolescence](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages) ([Definition 15.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages)).

**Proposition 56.2 (The visible changes).**

Alongside the growth burst, over several years:

- in girls, commonly from about nine to thirteen: breasts develop, hips widen, body hair appears — and the *first menstrual periods* mark the cycles of [Chapter 57](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/57-the-reproductive-systems#ch-g8-reproductive-systems) starting up;
- in boys, commonly a year or two later: the voice deepens (“breaks”), [shoulders](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/4-my-body#def-g1-my-body-joint) broaden, body and facial hair appear, and the testes begin producing [sperm cells](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#def-g4-animal-reproduction-sexual) ;
- in both: [skin](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/5-the-five-senses#def-g1-the-five-senses-sense) turns oilier (the age of spots), sweat changes, moods ride the rebuilding — the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) , too, is being rewired toward its adult form.

**Proof.** *Admitted at this level.* ∎

**Remark 56.3 (The timetable is personal).**

[Remark 4.9](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/4-my-body#rem-g1-my-body-different) said it of height; [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) repeats it louder. Classmates of one age can stand years apart on this road — early and late are both normal, the order of changes varies, and nearly everyone lands in the same place by the end. The ranges above are wide, and the widest thing about them is how little they say about any single person.

## 56.2 The machinery: a second messenger system

**Definition 56.4 (Hormones, first encounter).**

[Puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) is not decided in the organs it changes. It is *ordered* — by chemical messengers called *hormones*: substances released into the *[blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb)* by specialized organs, carried everywhere, and obeyed by the organs built to hear them. At [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty), a control center at the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system)’s base wakes, its hormones instruct the reproductive organs, and *their* hormones — carried body-wide by [Proposition 27.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/27-the-heart-and-the-blood#prop-g4-heart-and-blood-carries)’s delivery service — order the whole rebuild: growth, hair, voice, cycles.

**Example 56.5 (One signal, many building sites).**

The [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) carries a [hormone](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) everywhere at once — which is why [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) is a *coordinated* rebuild: voice, [shoulders](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/4-my-body#def-g1-my-body-joint) and hair follow the same messenger, on one schedule, though the sites lie half a body apart. No [nerve](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) wiring connects a voice box to a beard; the bloodstream’s broadcast does ([Chapter 61](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/61-hormonal-communication#ch-g8-hormonal-communication) makes this system a chapter of its own).

**Remark 56.6 (Why the mood weather?).**

The same messengers reach the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system), which is itself mid-renovation: mood swings, new intensities, [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) drifting later — weather, not fault. Knowing the machinery helps on both sides of it: the storms are chemistry plus construction, they are normal, and they pass.

## 56.3 Living through the rebuild

**Proposition 56.7 (Care during construction).**

A body mid-rebuild has a builder’s needs, all met before in this book:

- material and fuel: the burst is paid in matter — balanced eating ( [Method 18.8](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/18-a-balanced-diet#met-g3-balanced-diet-check) ), building matter included ( [Exercise 50.11](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/50-digestion-and-nutrients#exo-g7-digestion-and-nutrients-11) );
- [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) : the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) ’s renovation and the body’s growth both run at night ( [Proposition 33.9](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#prop-g5-brain-in-command-protect) ) — and the drifted-late clock still needs its hours;
- movement: [bones](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/17-bones-and-muscles#def-g3-bones-and-muscles-skeleton) and [heart](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/27-the-heart-and-the-blood#def-g4-heart-and-blood-heart) in their last, best building years ( [Method 17.9](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/17-bones-and-muscles#met-g3-bones-and-muscles-care) );
- and no sabotage: the substances of [Proposition 36.5](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/36-healthy-choices#prop-g5-healthy-choices-substances) strike hardest at bodies and [brains](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) still under construction.

**Proof.** *Admitted at this level.* ∎

**Example 56.8 (Questions have addresses).**

[Puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) raises questions — about timing, about bodies, about feelings — and they have proper addresses: school nurses and doctors answer them daily, confidentially and without surprise; trusted adults have all been through it; and this book’s chapters are built to be reread. What deserves no trust: playground legend and the internet’s worst corners, which trade on exactly this age’s uncertainties.

## 56.4 Exercises

**Exercise 56.1 ★.**

Define [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty), and name the stage of [Definition 15.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages) whose core it is.

**Solution of Exercise 56.1.**

The stage in which a child’s body becomes an adult’s — reproductive organs maturing and beginning [gamete](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/54-sexual-reproduction#def-g8-sexual-reproduction-gametes) production, adult form taken on. It is the biological core of [adolescence](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages).

**Exercise 56.2 ★.**

List three changes of girls’ [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty), three of boys’, and two common to both.

**Solution of Exercise 56.2.**

Girls: breasts develop, hips widen, first menstrual periods (with body hair). Boys: voice deepens, [shoulders](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/4-my-body#def-g1-my-body-joint) broaden, sperm production begins (with facial hair). Both: the growth burst, oilier [skin](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/5-the-five-senses#def-g1-the-five-senses-sense), changed sweat, mood weather.

**Exercise 56.3 ★.**

What marks the start of [gamete](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/54-sexual-reproduction#def-g8-sexual-reproduction-gametes) production in each sex, by [Proposition 56.2](#prop-g8-puberty-changes)?

**Solution of Exercise 56.3.**

In girls, the first menstrual periods — the cycles starting up; in boys, the testes beginning to produce [sperm cells](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/23-how-animals-reproduce#def-g4-animal-reproduction-sexual).

**Exercise 56.4 ★.**

What is a [hormone](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) — released where, carried how, obeyed by whom?

**Solution of Exercise 56.4.**

A chemical messenger released into the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) by a specialized organ, carried everywhere by the circulation, and obeyed by the organs built to respond to it.

**Exercise 56.5 ★.**

Where does [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty)’s chain of command begin, and where does it end?

**Solution of Exercise 56.5.**

It begins at a control center at the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system)’s base, whose [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) wake the reproductive organs; their [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones), in turn, order the whole body’s rebuild — so it ends everywhere the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) reaches.

**Exercise 56.6 ★.**

Two thirteen-year-olds stand at visibly different stages. What does [Remark 56.3](#rem-g8-puberty-timetable) say — in full?

**Solution of Exercise 56.6.**

Both are normal: the timetable is personal — early and late both healthy, the order of changes variable, and the destination shared. Years apart at thirteen says almost nothing about either of them.

**Exercise 56.7 ★★.**

Why can one messenger coordinate building sites half a body apart, where [nerves](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) would need wiring to each? Use [Example 56.5](#ex-g8-puberty-sites).

**Solution of Exercise 56.7.**

Because the messenger travels in the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb), which visits every organ anyway: one broadcast reaches voice box, [shoulders](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/4-my-body#def-g1-my-body-joint) and [skin](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/5-the-five-senses#def-g1-the-five-senses-sense) alike, no wiring needed. The organs that respond are those built to hear that messenger — addressing by receiver, not by route.

**Exercise 56.8 ★★.**

Explain the mood weather of [Remark 56.6](#rem-g8-puberty-moods) — two causes, one reassurance.

**Solution of Exercise 56.8.**

Cause one: the [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) themselves reach the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system). Cause two: the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) is simultaneously rewiring toward its adult form. Reassurance: it is weather — normal, explicable, and passing.

**Exercise 56.9 ★★.**

Connect the growth burst to the plate: which [nutrient](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/50-digestion-and-nutrients#def-g7-digestion-and-nutrients-families) families does the rebuild draw hardest, and from which chapter’s reasoning?

**Solution of Exercise 56.9.**

Building matter above all — the burst builds [bone](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/17-bones-and-muscles#def-g3-bones-and-muscles-skeleton) and [muscle](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/17-bones-and-muscles#def-g3-bones-and-muscles-muscle) — with dairy’s bone-builders and steady [energy](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/18-a-balanced-diet#prop-g3-balanced-diet-jobs) from the starchy family: the crash-diet reasoning of [Exercise 50.11](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/50-digestion-and-nutrients#exo-g7-digestion-and-nutrients-11), run forward.

**Exercise 56.10 ★★.**

Why do [Proposition 36.5](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/36-healthy-choices#prop-g5-healthy-choices-substances)’s substances strike an [adolescent](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages) body hardest? (The construction image carries the answer.)

**Solution of Exercise 56.10.**

A construction site is most vulnerable mid-build: tobacco, alcohol and the rest strike organs — the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) first — whose wiring and tissues are still being laid. Damage to a finished structure is repair; damage to a half-built one is design change.

**Exercise 56.11 ★★.**

Sort into trustworthy and not, with one reason each: the school nurse; a viral video’s miracle claims; this book; playground legend; the family doctor.

**Solution of Exercise 56.11.**

Trustworthy: the school nurse, the family doctor (trained, confidential, unsurprisable), this book (built to be reread and checked). Not: the viral video (it sells, trading on uncertainty), playground legend (retold guesses with no address for corrections).

**Exercise 56.12 ★★★.**

“[Puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) is the [hormone](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) system’s public debut.” Defend the sentence: what does the rebuild demonstrate about that system’s reach, coordination and difference from [nerve](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) signaling — three claims, three observations.

**Solution of Exercise 56.12.**

Reach: one messenger changes voice, [skin](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/5-the-five-senses#def-g1-the-five-senses-sense), [skeleton](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/17-bones-and-muscles#def-g3-bones-and-muscles-skeleton) and mood at once — the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) delivers everywhere (observation: the coordinated rebuild). Coordination: the changes run on one schedule though no [nerve](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) connects the sites (observation: beard and voice arriving together). Difference from [nerves](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system): no wiring, no split-second speed — orders take months and act body-wide, where [Proposition 33.2](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#prop-g5-brain-in-command-loop)’s messages take milliseconds and one path (observation: [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty)’s slow years against the catch’s fifth of a second).

## 56.5 Problem: The Growth-Chart Conference

**Problem 56.1.**

Weekend problem — four (invented) growth charts, read with the whole chapter

A school doctor reviews four charts, height against age, each with its measuring dates: L, whose curve leapt steeply from eleven to thirteen and is now flattening at fifteen; M, flat-climbing at thirteen, burst not yet begun; N, mid-burst at fourteen; O, whose steep segment ran nine to twelve and has plateaued.

**Part I — Reading the curves.**

1. Place each chart on [Remark 15.3](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#rem-g3-stages-of-life-bursts) ’s map: which burst is showing, and where does each student stand on it?
2. M worries about being “left behind”. Draft the doctor’s answer from [Remark 56.3](#rem-g8-puberty-timetable) , with the prediction the chart’s flat-climb supports.
3. O asks whether the plateau means “done growing at twelve”. Correct the reading: what does the plateau end, and what continues after it?
4. Why does the doctor read the *slope* , not the height, to judge where each stands?

**Part II — Behind the curves.**

5. Name the machinery that started each burst, and the route its orders traveled.
6. The doctor also tracks [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) and diet at these visits. Tie each to its line of [Proposition 56.7](#prop-g8-puberty-care) .
7. N reports mood storms and a late-drifting bedtime. Give the two-part explanation of [Remark 56.6](#rem-g8-puberty-moods) — and the practical consequence for N’s school-week [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) .
8. L asks the doctor privately about a change the chart cannot show. State, without inventing the question, why the consulting room is the right address ( [Example 56.8](#ex-g8-puberty-questions) ).

**Part III — The conference note.**

9. Write the one-line note for each chart: stage, normality, and any care point.
10. The four charts differ by years, yet the doctor files all four under “normal”. Justify in one sentence.
11. A parent asks for “something to speed M up”. Answer with the timetable remark and the machinery: what is there to fix?
12. Close with the chapter’s one-sentence summary for the class notice board: what [puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) is, who runs it, and what it needs.

**Solution of Problem 56.1.**

**1.** All four show the [adolescent](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/15-the-stages-of-life#def-g3-stages-of-life-stages) burst. L: burst nearly complete, flattening toward adult height. M: burst not yet begun — still on childhood’s steady climb. N: mid-burst. O: an early burst, run nine to twelve, now plateauing.

**2.** “Your chart is exactly a normal chart before the burst: the timetable is personal, late is as healthy as early, and your steady climb says the burst is coming — charts like yours turn steep within a year or two, and land at the same adult heights as everyone’s.”

**3.** The plateau ends the *height* burst — growth in stature. [Puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty)’s other work — filling out, maturing, the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system)’s renovation — continues beyond it; O is early, not finished.

**4.** Because height mixes inheritance and age — a tall pre-burst child can out-measure a short mid-burst one. The slope shows the process: steepness says burst, flattening says its end, regardless of the line’s height.

**5.** The waking of the control center at the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system)’s base; its [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) ordered the reproductive organs awake, and their [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) — broadcast by the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) — ordered the growth plates and the rest.

**6.** [Sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs): growth and the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system)’s renovation run at night — short nights starve both. Diet: the burst is paid in matter — building matter and the plate’s families fund it. (Movement and no-sabotage complete the care list.)

**7.** The [hormones](#def-g8-puberty-hormones) reach N’s [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system), and the [brain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/33-the-brain-in-command#def-g5-brain-in-command-system) is mid-rewiring — chemistry plus construction, normal and passing. Practical: the clock drifts late but school does not; N must defend the hours by an earlier, screen-light-free wind-down ([Proposition 36.3](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/36-healthy-choices#prop-g5-healthy-choices-screens)).

**8.** Because the consulting room is trained, confidential and unsurprised — questions the chart cannot show still have a proper address, and legend and the internet’s corners are not it.

**9.** L: burst ending, normal — guard [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) through the exam years. M: pre-burst, normal — patience and the plate. N: mid-burst, normal — [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs) hours and building matter. O: early burst complete, normal — movement for the filling-out years.

**10.** Because normal is a wide road, not a line: four healthy timetables, years apart, all arriving.

**11.** Nothing: the machinery is intact and its timetable personal — there is no fault to fix, and no lever worth pulling on a healthy chart; the honest prescription is time (with the care list while it passes).

**12.** “[Puberty](#def-g8-puberty-puberty) is the body’s hormone-ordered rebuild from child to adult — run by messengers in the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb), on a personal timetable, and funded by [sleep](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#prop-g1-healthy-habits-needs), food and movement.”
