# Chapter 71 — Our Responsibility

Nine years of this book end here, and its threads meet in a plain fact: the [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) that can read this page is the one [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) that understands the machinery it belongs to — and understanding, as [Chapter 59](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/59-contraception#ch-g8-contraception) first said, brings choice. This closing chapter gathers the responsibilities the understanding creates: toward one’s own health, toward other people’s, and toward the web of [living things](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components) that carries us all.

## 71.1 Responsibility for one’s own machinery

**Proposition 71.1 (Health as informed self-management).**

The book’s health threads, tied:

**Example 71.2 (The check-up, read as biology).**

## 71.2 Responsibility toward others

**Proposition 71.3 (Health is shared machinery).**

Three mechanisms make health a shared account:

- *transmission* ( [Definition 69.4](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/69-microbes-and-infection#def-g9-microbes-and-infection-stages) ): your [hygiene](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/6-healthy-habits#def-g1-healthy-habits-hygiene) , your cough’s cover and your sick-day at home are other people’s protection;
- *pooled [immunity](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/70-the-immune-defenses#def-g9-immune-defenses-memory)* ( [Proposition 70.6](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/70-the-immune-defenses#prop-g9-immune-defenses-vaccination) ): vaccination guards, through you, those who cannot be trained;
- *the commons of medicine* : antibiotics kept working ( [Exercise 68.10](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/68-how-species-change#exo-g9-how-species-change-10) ) and [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) given ( [Example 66.5](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/66-unique-individuals#ex-g9-unique-individuals-medicine) — the register runs on donors) are shared resources spent or stocked by individual choices.

**Example 71.4 (One teenager’s shared account).**

The week’s ordinary entries: stayed home feverish (transmission cut); boosters current (the pool held); a finished antibiotic course from spring (the commons unspent); a first [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) donation planned at eighteen (the register stocked). None heroic — [Example 36.2](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/36-healthy-choices#ex-g5-healthy-choices-day)’s lesson at the scale of a town: public health is ordinary days, kept.

## 71.3 Responsibility toward the living world

**Proposition 71.5 (The stewardship, restated with all its reasons).**

The nature threads, tied with their mechanisms:

- every [food chain](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/19-food-chains#def-g3-food-chains-chain) starts green ( [Proposition 40.6](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/40-plants-are-producers#prop-g6-plants-are-producers-firstlink) ), every table is an ecosystem’s output ( [Proposition 43.8](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/43-producing-our-food#prop-g6-producing-our-food-costs) );

Stewardship is the same maintenance mindset as health, applied to the larger body we live inside.

**Example 71.6 (What a citizen’s biology is for).**

The votes, purchases and habits of adult life keep arriving dressed as questions this book has equipped: Is this fishery taking faster than renewal? Does this policy guard the pollinators’ [habitat](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/11-where-animals-live#def-g2-where-animals-live-habitat) or pave it? Is this claimed miracle diet, cure or “[gene](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/65-genes-and-dna#def-g9-genes-and-dna-gene) for X” coherent ([Method 66.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/66-unique-individuals#met-g9-unique-individuals-claims), [Method 59.8](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/59-contraception#met-g8-contraception-evaluate))? Should this antibiotic be in this trough? A citizen who can run these audits is what nine years of chapters were for.

**Method 71.7 (The graduate’s method).**

Leaving Book 1, carry the method more than the facts:

1. observe before concluding ( [Method 2.10](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/2-animals-around-us#met-g1-animals-around-us-observe) started it; every census and notebook since);
2. test fairly — one difference, a control ( [Method 22.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/22-what-plants-need#met-g4-what-plants-need-fairtest) , used in every grade after);
3. name the mechanism — no claim audited until its link is named ( [Method 59.8](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/59-contraception#met-g8-contraception-evaluate) );
4. weigh independent witnesses ( [Method 67.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/67-evidence-of-evolution#met-g9-evidence-of-evolution-weigh) );
5. and respect the living machinery, in your body and outside it: it is old, subtle, repairable within limits — and yours to keep.

**Remark 71.8 (What comes next).**

Why is a known family tendency a schedule rather than a fate?

Because inherited tendencies are ranges lived in, not destinies: the furring-prone family that eats, moves and checks accordingly rewrites the outcome — knowledge converts the deal into a schedule of habits and check-ups.

Why is [biodiversity](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-biodiversity) “working capital” rather than scenery? Two mechanisms.

**Solution of Exercise 71.5.**

The web’s shock-absorption runs on many [species](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#def-g5-biodiversity-species) — threads and understudies; and selection’s future runs on variety — the reserve every changed condition draws from. Both are functions, spendable and bankable, not decoration.

**Exercise 71.6 ★.**

State the graduate’s method’s five steps from memory.

Observe before concluding; test fairly with one difference and a control; name the mechanism before crediting a claim; weigh independent witnesses; respect the living machinery, inside and out.

**Exercise 71.7 ★★.**

Justify the sick-day at home as a public-health act, stage named.

**Solution of Exercise 71.7.**

The feverish student at home removes the outbreak’s transmission at its source — the day off is a cut route, cheaper than any later medicine ([Problem 69.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/69-microbes-and-infection#pb-g9-microbes-and-infection-1)’s motto in practice).

**Exercise 71.8 ★★.**

Whose shield is your vaccination? Answer with the pool, and name two dependents.

**Solution of Exercise 71.8.**

The pool’s — each trained person is a dead end that starves the spread. Dependents: the too-young infant ([Problem 70.1](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/70-the-immune-defenses#pb-g9-immune-defenses-1)’s watched contact) and the immune-weakened patient, shielded only by their neighbors’ training.

**Exercise 71.9 ★★.**

Audit as [Example 71.6](#ex-g9-our-responsibility-citizen) would: “our new spray kills every insect in the orchard — total protection.”

**Solution of Exercise 71.9.**

“Every insect” includes the pollinators the orchard’s [fruit](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#prop-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-transform) depends on and the pest-eaters that worked free ([Example 30.6](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/30-biodiversity#ex-g5-biodiversity-orchard)); the audit predicts paid [pollination](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/31-from-flower-to-fruit#def-g5-flower-to-fruit-steps) and worse outbreaks after the understudies die — total protection that removes the workforce is a bill deferred, not protection.

**Exercise 71.10 ★★.**

Explain “antibiotics are a commons” with the ward’s selection — and the two habits that keep the commons stocked.

**Solution of Exercise 71.10.**

Every ragged dose runs the ward’s selection sieve — killing the susceptible, promoting the resistant — so each misuse spends the drug’s future usefulness for everyone. The stocking habits: finish prescribed courses, and demand no antibiotic for viral illnesses.

**Exercise 71.11 ★★.**

Apply the method’s five steps to a viral “miracle cure” post, one step at a time.

**Solution of Exercise 71.11.**

Observe: what does the post actually show — testimony and [lights](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-conditions), or data? Test: was there a fair trial — one difference, a control — or one grateful case? Mechanism: which link does the cure claim to block — can it be named? Witnesses: do independent sources agree, or does everything trace to the seller? Respect: does it ask you to abandon working maintenance for the miracle? Five steps, and such posts rarely survive the first two.

**Exercise 71.12 ★★★.**

Write the book’s closing paragraph yourself: one sentence each for the [cell](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/29-a-first-look-at-cells#def-g5-first-look-at-cells-cell), the body, the web, the family tree — and the reader’s place in all four.

**Solution of Exercise 71.12.**

For example: “Every [living thing](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/37-exploring-our-environment#def-g6-exploring-our-environment-components) is built of [cells](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/29-a-first-look-at-cells#def-g5-first-look-at-cells-cell) running one ancient chemistry — and so are you. Your body is a maintained machine of organs, borders and messengers — and its maintenance is yours. The whole of it is one branching family, written in one code, changing under selection — and you are the [branch](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/3-plants-around-us#def-g1-plants-around-us-tree) that understood the tree.”

## 71.5 Problem: The Graduation Audit

**Problem 71.1.**

Weekend problem — one town year, audited with the whole book

Your town’s (invented) year in headlines: a winter flu wave; a spring debate over spraying the plane trees; a summer [fish](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/14-sorting-living-things#prop-g3-sorting-living-things-groups) kill in the park pond; an autumn campaign for the new marsh reserve; and, year-round, the clinic’s vaccination and donation drives.

**Part I — The health file.**

1. The flu wave: name the transmission routes the town’s advice targeted, and why the clinic vaccinated care-home staff first.
2. The drives: state what the [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) register and the vaccination ledger each stock, and who draws on them.
3. A columnist mocks “fuss over hand-washing”. Answer with the ward of [Example 69.7](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/69-microbes-and-infection#ex-g9-microbes-and-infection-history) — one paragraph.
4. The pharmacy reports unfinished antibiotic courses returning. Which commons is being spent, by which mechanism?

**Part II — The nature file.**

5. The spraying debate: run the orchard audit ( [Exercise 71.9](#exo-g9-our-responsibility-9) ) on “kill every insect” — who else dies, and what free services stop?

**Solution of Problem 71.1.**

**1.** Droplets and hands — hence cover-the-cough, wash, air the rooms, stay home ill. Staff first because they connect the building’s most fragile: their training pools exactly where the untrainable are gathered.

**2.** The register stocks matched [blood](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/25-the-journey-of-food#prop-g4-journey-of-food-absorb) for the day of accidents and surgeries; the ledger stocks trained memories. Drawers: anyone — the register’s match found by group, the pool’s shield covering the young, old and ill.

**3.** For example: “A ward once halved its mothers’ deaths with nothing but washed hands: the ‘fuss’ interrupts couriers no [eye](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/5-the-five-senses#def-g1-the-five-senses-sense) can see, and the century and a half since Semmelweis has only confirmed that the cheapest medicine in existence runs from a soap dish.”

**4.** The antibiotic commons, by ragged selection: each unfinished course spares and promotes the resistant minority, spending the drug’s power against everyone’s future [infections](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/69-microbes-and-infection#def-g9-microbes-and-infection-stages).

**5.** The spray would take pollinators and pest-eaters with the pests: [fruit](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/16-flowers-fruits-and-seeds#prop-g3-flowers-fruits-seeds-transform) set falls with the bees, and the survivors’ next outbreak meets no ladybugs, no tits — the free services stop, and the bill returns as rented hives and more spray.

**6.** The pea-green bloom respires all night in warm still water that holds little [oxygen](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/46-what-is-respiration#def-g7-what-is-respiration-respiration): the dawn minimum hit bottom ([Example 48.5](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/48-oxygen-in-the-water#ex-g7-oxygen-in-the-water-curve)). Prescribe: night-running fountain, thin the mud and overgrowth — and mind the [nutrient](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/50-digestion-and-nutrients#def-g7-digestion-and-nutrients-families) inflows that fed the bloom.

Reserve: its varied [populations](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/55-reproduction-and-the-environment#def-g8-reproduction-and-environment-population) bank the [alleles](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/65-genes-and-dna#def-g9-genes-and-dna-gene) hard times will call. (Storks return where meadows do.)

**8.** The unpaid ledger: flood water stored and released slowly, water filtered, pollinators housed, young [fish](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/14-sorting-living-things#prop-g3-sorting-living-things-groups) nursed — services billed only when the marsh is drained and the town buys them from engineers.

**9.** Open answers; a defensible pair: best — the reserve (capital banked under all three lasting-use rules); worst — unfinished courses or the spray proposal (commons spent, workers evicted), judged by take-no-faster, keep-the-workers, return-what-you-borrow.

**10.** Observed: dead [fish](https://one-course.com/books/biology/1/en/chapter/14-sorting-living-things#prop-g3-sorting-living-things-groups) at dawn, green water, readings low.
