## 20.1 द्रव्यमान: कितना पदार्थ

किसी चीज़ का *द्रव्यमान* बताता है कि वह कितने पदार्थ से बनी है। पदार्थ जितना ज़्यादा, द्रव्यमान उतना ही बड़ा — और पृथ्वी उसे उतने ही ज़ोर से नीचे खींचती है, इसीलिए ज़्यादा द्रव्यमान वाली चीज़ें हाथ में भारी लगती हैं और [तुला](https://one-course.com/books/physics/1/hi/chapter/17-levers-and-balance-scales#def-g3-levers-and-scales-scale) के अपने पलड़े को नीचे दबा देती हैं।

**उदाहरण 20.2 (बड़ा होना भारी होना नहीं है).**

तकिया तुम्हारी पूरी बाँहें भर देता है, फिर भी तुम उसे आसानी से उठा लेते हो। तुम्हारी मुट्ठी से भी छोटा एक पत्थर कलाई पर ज़ोर डाल देता है। तकिया बड़ा है पर उसमें पदार्थ कम है — ज़्यादातर पंख और [हवा](https://one-course.com/books/physics/1/hi/chapter/10-air-around-us#def-g2-air-around-us-air); पत्थर छोटा है पर पदार्थ से ठसाठस भरा। [द्रव्यमान](#def-g3-measuring-mass-mass) का सवाल यह है कि *पदार्थ कितना है*, यह नहीं कि जगह कितनी घिरती है। (ये दोनों विचार और उनका मुश्किल नाच किसी दिन तैरने-डूबने की कहानी में फिर मिलेंगे।)

**परिभाषा 20.3 (ग्राम और किलोग्राम).**

[द्रव्यमान](#def-g3-measuring-mass-mass) *ग्राम* (लिखते हैं $\mathrm{g}$) और *किलोग्राम* (लिखते हैं $\mathrm{kg}$) में मापा जाता है:

1. जाँच लो कि ख़ाली [तुला](https://one-course.com/books/physics/1/hi/chapter/17-levers-and-balance-scales#def-g3-levers-and-scales-scale) सीधी टिकी है;
2. ख़रबूज़ा एक पलड़े में रखो;
3. दूसरे पलड़े में बाट डालो, पहले सबसे बड़े काम के बाट, जब तक दोनों पलड़े सीधे न हो जाएँ;
4. बाटों को जोड़ लो: उनका जोड़ ही ख़रबूज़े का [द्रव्यमान](#def-g3-measuring-mass-mass) है।

अगर पलड़े $500\,\mathrm{g}$, $200\,\mathrm{g}$ और $100\,\mathrm{g}$ के बाटों से सीधे हो जाएँ, तो ख़रबूज़े का [द्रव्यमान](#def-g3-measuring-mass-mass) $500 + 200 + 100 =
800\,\mathrm{g}$ है।

## 20.3 द्रव्यमान पदार्थ के पीछे चलता है

**प्रतिज्ञप्ति 20.7 (वही पदार्थ, वही द्रव्यमान).**
