What is API gravity?

The API gravity of a crude oil is

°API=141.5SG−131.5,\text{°API} = \frac{141.5}{\mathrm{SG}} - 131.5 ,

where SG\mathrm{SG} is its specific gravity at 60∘F60{}^{\circ}\mathrm{F} relative to water. Water has 10 degrees API; the lighter (less dense) the oil, the higher its API gravity.
