An economic moat is a lasting advantage that lets a firm earn returns above its cost of capital in a business without competitors entering until those returns are gone: a cost advantage from scale, proprietary information or order flow, customers’ switching costs, network effects, or a licence or relationship others cannot obtain quickly.
