A biozone is a body of strata defined or characterised by the fossils it contains. A range zone holds the known occurrences of one taxon; an interval zone is the body of strata between two specified fossil horizons, for example the lowest occurrences of two taxa. The first appearance datum (FAD) of a taxon is the horizon of its lowest occurrence, the last appearance datum that of its highest. An index fossil is a taxon used to recognise a biozone: the best are widespread, abundant, easy to identify and short-lived.
