A lithostratigraphic unit is a body of rock defined and recognised by its lithology and its position among other bodies, whatever its age. The primary unit is the formation: a body of rock distinct enough from its neighbours to be mapped at the scale of the region, into which the whole column should be divided. A member is a named subdivision of a formation, distinguished by its lithology; a group is a succession of two or more formations with significant lithological characters in common. A formal name joins a local geographical name to the rank or to the dominant rock: the Kell Sandstone, the Mardon Shale Formation.
