又称: magnetic reversal · normal polarity · reversed polarity

Definition 10.4 High School Earth and Space Sciences · 第 10 章 — From Continental Drift to Seafloor Spreading

A magnetic reversal is an exchange of the Earth’s north and south magnetic poles. A time when the field pointed as it does today is a time of normal polarity; a time when it pointed the opposite way, a time of reversed polarity. A rock magnetised during either time has the same polarity.

The geomagnetic polarity time scale for the last 5.5 million years: black for normal polarity, white for reversed. The present normal interval began 780\,000 years ago; there were twenty reversals in the last five million years. Data: Cande and Kent (1995).
