A sequence is arithmetic with common difference $d$ if each term is obtained from the previous one by adding $d$ :

u_{n+1} = u_n + d \quad \text{for all } n.

Equivalently: the difference $u_{n+1} - u_n$ is constant, equal to $d$ .
