A barometer is the instrument that measures air pressure — one more member of our family of honest judges, beside the thermometer and the scale. Its needle rises when the atmosphere above presses harder, and falls when the press lightens.

Reading a barometer: not where the needle stands so much as which way it moves — the atmosphere announces its plans.
