An operational amplifier is an integrated circuit with two inputs — the non-inverting input at potential V+ and the inverting input at V− — and one output at potential Vs, powered by two supplies ±Vcc (typically ±15V) that are usually left off the diagrams. It amplifies the difference ϵ=V+−V−:

with an open-loop gain μ of order 105 and a saturation voltage Vsat slightly below Vcc. When μ∣ϵ∣ would exceed Vsat, the output sticks at +Vsat or −Vsat: the saturated regime.
