Wat is Alternative trading system?

In US law an alternative trading system (ATS) is a system that brings together buyers and sellers of securities as an exchange does but is operated by a broker-dealer under Regulation ATS (adopted in December 1998) instead of registering as an exchange. It does not list securities and does not regulate its participants.
