What is Notional, gross and net exposure?

Also known as: notional · gross exposure · net exposure

Definition 7.2 Markets I: The Ecosystem and Exchange-Traded Markets · Chapter 7 — P&L and the Accounting of a Position

The notional of a position qiq_i marked at price pip_i is ∣qi∣ pi|q_i|\,p_i (times the contract multiplier, for a derivative). For a book, the gross exposure is ∑i∣qi∣pi\sum_i |q_i| p_i and the net exposure is ∑iqipi\sum_i q_i p_i.

Examples

Example 7.3 (A long–short book)

Long $300 million and short $200 million on $100 million of equity: gross $500 million, or 5×5\times the equity, the measure of how much can go wrong; net $100 million, or 1×1\times, the measure of how much market direction is being taken. Limits are set on both, and on each position separately.
