Un éventail sous-marin est un cône de sédiments au pied d’un talus continental, alimenté par un canyon : un éventail supérieur avec un chenal principal entre des levées, un éventail moyen de chenaux distributaires se terminant par des lobes de sable, et un éventail inférieur de fines turbidites passant à une boue de plaine abyssale.

(a) La séquence de Bouma d’un banc de turbidite complet, dessinée comme un log de taille de grain (la largeur indique les grains plus grossiers), avec ses cinq divisions. (b) Un éventail sous-marin en plan : un canyon alimente un chenal entre levées, qui se divise en chenaux distributaires se terminant par des lobes sableux ; des turbidites minces se répandent sur l’éventail inférieur.
