An energy band of a crystal is a continuous range of allowed one-electron energies, formed from the orbitals of all its atoms. A band gap is a range of energies with no levels between two bands. In a semiconductor or an insulator at zero temperature, the highest filled band is the valence band and the lowest empty one the conduction band.
