What is Enolates?

Also known as: alpha carbon · alpha hydrogen · enolate ion

Definition 25.3 University Chemistry — Year 2 · Chapter 25 — Enols, Enolates and the Aldol Reaction

The α\alpha carbon of a carbonyl compound is the carbon bound to the carbonyl carbon; its hydrogens are α\alpha hydrogens. Removing one gives an enolate ion, whose negative charge is shared between the α\alpha carbon and the oxygen.

The two resonance structures of the enolate of propanone. The negative charge is shared by the carbon and the oxygen: the enolate is an ambident nucleophile, reacting with most carbon electrophiles at carbon.
