What is Friedel–Crafts reactions?

Also known as: Friedel--Crafts alkylation · Friedel--Crafts acylation · acylium ion

Definition 22.5 University Chemistry — Year 2 · Chapter 22 — Aromaticity and Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution

A Friedel–Crafts alkylation attaches an alkyl group to an aromatic ring from a halogenoalkane and a Lewis acid (AlClX3\ce{AlCl3}). A Friedel–Crafts acylation attaches an acyl group RCO\ce{RCO} from an acyl chloride and AlClX3\ce{AlCl3}, through the acylium ion R−C≡OX+\ce{R-C#O+}, giving an aryl ketone.
