What is Overpotential?

Also known as: threshold potential

Definition 10.5 University Chemistry — Year 2 · Chapter 10 — Current–Potential Curves

The overpotential of an electrode through which a current ii flows is η=E(i)−Eeq\eta = E(i) - E_{\text{eq}}, the difference between its potential and the equilibrium (Nernst) potential of the couple. The threshold potential of a half-reaction is the potential beyond which its current becomes noticeable.
