An air mass is a very large body of air in which the temperature and the humidity are nearly the same everywhere at a given height. It takes them from the region where it formed, its source region.

Typical source regions of air masses around the North Atlantic (schematic): over the Arctic, the cold continents, the northern ocean, the subtropical ocean and the Sahara. Blue: cold air masses; red: warm ones.
