An alpha element is one of the even- $Z$ elements oxygen, neon, magnesium, silicon, sulfur and calcium, whose most abundant isotopes ( $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ , $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ , $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ , $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ , $^{32}\mathrm{S}$ , $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ ) have mass numbers that are multiples of four, and which are made mainly in massive stars and returned to the gas by their explosion as core-collapse supernovae.
