b-value, magnitude of completeness কী?

অন্য নাম: b-value · magnitude of completeness

Definition 18.14 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · অধ্যায় 18 — The Earthquake Source

The constant bb of the Gutenberg–Richter law of a region is its b-value. The magnitude of completeness of a catalogue is the smallest magnitude above which it records every earthquake of the region and period.

The 7031 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more in the world, 1976–2025 (U.S. Geological Survey catalogue). (a) The yearly number of earthquakes of magnitude at least M; the line is the least-squares fit of _10 N against M from 6.0 to 7.5, where each count exceeds 200: _10 N = 8.20 - 1.01\,M per year. Above magnitude 8 the few events fall below the line. (b) The share of the total seismic moment released by the earthquakes of magnitude at least M, each moment computed as 101.5M + 9.1 N\, m: the 40 earthquakes of magnitude 8 or more released 63\,\% of it.
