什么是 Balanced cross-section?

Definition 13.10 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 13 章 — Anatomy of a Mountain Belt: The Alps

A balanced cross-section is a cross-section of deformed rocks, drawn parallel to the direction of transport, that can be restored to a geologically reasonable undeformed state without gaining or losing rock: the lengths of marker beds and the areas of rock units in the section are conserved between the deformed and the restored states.

Line-length balance of a marker bed folded into chevrons with limbs dipping 40 (above), and the same bed restored between its pin lines (below), at true scale. Each limb keeps its length; the folded bed spans l = 30.0 40 = 23.0\, km, a shortening of 1 - 40 = 23.4\,\%.
