什么是 Barotropic and baroclinic fluids?

又称: barotropic fluid · baroclinic fluid

Definition 19.13 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 19 章 — Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

A fluid is barotropic if its density is a function of pressure alone, so that surfaces of constant density coincide with surfaces of constant pressure; it is baroclinic if they cross.

The geometry of the thermal wind (schematic, a meridional section with the warm side to the south, p_1 > p_2 > p_3 > p_4). Warm air expands, so the layer between two pressure surfaces is thicker on the warm side than on the cold: each surface slopes down towards the cold side more steeply than the one below. The geostrophic wind is proportional to the slope, and grows with height (circles, larger for stronger wind), eastward, out of the page.
