The degree of the hydrolysis of silicates is named after its product. Bisiallitisation forms 2:1 clay minerals, such as smectites, with about two silicon atoms per aluminium; part of the cations stays in them. Monosiallitisation forms 1:1 clay minerals, kaolinite, with one silicon per aluminium; all the alkali and alkaline-earth cations leave. Allitisation removes the silicon entirely and leaves aluminium hydroxide, gibbsite.
