The Bjerknes feedback is the positive feedback between the sea-surface temperature, the winds and the ocean currents of the equatorial Pacific: a warming of the east weakens the east–west contrast of temperature and pressure, hence the trade winds; weaker trade winds let the warm water of the west spread east and bring up less cold water in the east, which warms the east further. The same loop amplifies a cooling.
