What is Branching decay?

Definition 25.9 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · Chapter 25 — Radiometric Dating Methods

A parent undergoes branching decay when its nuclei decay by two or more routes to different daughters. Each route ii has its own partial decay constant λi\lambda_i; the parent decays with the total constant λ=∑iλi\lambda = \sum_i \lambda_i, and a fraction λi/λ\lambda_i/\lambda of the decays take route ii. Potassium-40 decays to calcium-40 with λβ=4.962×10−10\lambda_\beta = 4.962 \times 10^{-10} per year and to argon-40 with λe=0.581×10−10\lambda_e = 0.581 \times 10^{-10} per year.
