What is Channel steepness and concavity indices?

Also known as: concavity index · channel steepness index

Definition 18.10 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 18 — Quantitative Geomorphology

When the gradient of a river follows S=ksA−θS = k_s A^{-\theta}, the exponent θ\theta is the concavity index and the coefficient ksk_s the channel steepness index. To compare rivers, θ\theta is set to a common reference value θref\theta_{\mathrm{ref}}, and ksn=SAθrefk_{sn} = S A^{\theta_{\mathrm{ref}}} is the normalised steepness.
