A climate archive is a natural material that accumulates progressively, layer upon layer or ring upon ring, and preserves physical, chemical or biological characteristics of the environment in which each part formed. A climate proxy is a quantity measured in an archive that depends on a climate variable, such as a temperature, an amount of rain or a volume of ice, through a relation that can be calibrated, and so stands in for a measurement of that variable that was never made.
