What is Common midpoint, fold?

Also known as: common midpoint · fold (of seismic coverage)

Definition 2.10 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 2 — Exploration Seismology

For a source at xsx_s and a receiver at xrx_r on a line, the midpoint is (xs+xr)/2(x_s + x_r)/2 and the offset x=∣xr−xs∣x = |x_r - x_s|. A common midpoint (CMP) gather is the set of traces, from all the shots, that share the same midpoint; over flat layers they all reflect from the same subsurface point. The fold (of seismic coverage) is the number of traces in a gather. With NN channels at the receiver interval Δg\Delta g and a shot every Δs\Delta s along the line, the fold is NΔg/(2Δs)N\Delta g/(2\Delta s).

Common-midpoint geometry (schematic): four source–receiver pairs (dots, triangles) of different offsets share the same midpoint; over a flat reflector they all reflect at the same point below it. Their traces form a gather of fold four.
