An unconfined aquifer is an aquifer whose upper surface is the water table. A confined aquifer is an aquifer overlain by a layer of much lower conductivity, so that the water in it is under pressure: in a well that reaches it, the water rises above the top of the aquifer, to its potentiometric surface. A layer of low conductivity that slows but does not stop the passage of water between aquifers is an aquitard.
