Contact metamorphism is the metamorphism of rocks heated by a body of magma that has intruded them; it is confined to a zone around the intrusion, its aureole, in which the grade rises towards the contact. Regional metamorphism affects rocks buried deep over large regions, usually where plates converge; the rocks are squeezed as well as heated, and are almost always foliated.
