Dendroclimatology is the reconstruction of past climate from the annual growth rings of trees: their width, the density of their wood and their isotopic composition. Cross-dating is the matching of the pattern of wide and narrow rings between trees, which assigns to every ring its absolute calendar year and reveals rings that are locally absent in a single tree.
