Detection of a climate change is showing that the climate has changed in a defined statistical sense, beyond what its internal variability could produce, without giving the cause. Attribution is evaluating the contributions of several causes to a detected change, with an assigned likelihood. A climate fingerprint is the pattern in space and time of the response to one driver, as simulated by climate models, by which that driver is recognised in the observations.
