A diapir is a body of buoyant material, magma or partly molten rock, that rises through its surroundings by flowing them aside. The level of neutral buoyancy of a magma is the depth at which its density equals that of the surrounding rock: below it the magma is buoyant, above it it is denser than its surroundings. Magmatic stoping is the detachment of blocks of the wall or roof rock, which sink into the magma; blocks that stay enclosed in the solidified rock are xenoliths.
