An Earth system model (ESM) is a general circulation model of the atmosphere and the ocean coupled to models of the sea ice, the land surface and its vegetation, and of the carbon cycle, so that the concentrations of greenhouse gases and the properties of the surface can respond to the climate they help to set.

The ladder of the models of this chapter. Each rung adds processes that the one below had to be given; the lower rungs are cheap enough to be run a million times, the upper ones need supercomputers.
