A fertile mantle is a peridotite, typically a lherzolite, that still contains the clinopyroxene and aluminous mineral from which basalt is made. A residual mantle is the peridotite left behind once a melt has been extracted from it: poorer in clinopyroxene, aluminium, calcium and the incompatible elements, richer in olivine and with a higher Mg number.
