The flexural parameter of a plate is the length

\alpha = \left(\frac{4D}{(\rho_m - \rho_i)g}\right)^{1/4},

which sets the horizontal scale of its flexure. The forebulge is the low arch of upward flexure that a bent plate raises beyond the moat or basin next to its load.

(a) Under the load of a volcanic ridge (4.17 × 1012\, N\, m-1), a thin plate sinks deeply and narrowly, a thick one shallowly and widely; the forebulge moves out from 112\, km to 316\, km.
