A flood happens when water covers land that is usually dry. A river floods when it rises above its banks and spreads over the flat land on either side of it. That flat land, which the river covers from time to time, is its floodplain.

A meadow under flood water after days of rain. The line of trees marks the river’s usual bank; the farm stands on higher ground.
