Galactic chemical evolution is the change of the composition of the gas and of the stars of a galaxy with time, under the combined action of star formation, the stellar yields, the lifetimes of the stars, and the gas that flows into the galaxy or is driven out of it; and the study of that change by models compared with the abundances of stars of known age.
