A geological hazard is a process or phenomenon that originates in the internal processes of the Earth — an earthquake, an eruption, a mass movement such as a landslide or a debris flow — and may cause loss of life, injury, damage or disruption. It is characterised by its location, its intensity or magnitude, and its frequency or probability. The exposure to a hazard is the situation of the people, buildings, infrastructure and other assets located where the hazard can reach, measured by their number or their value. Disaster risk is the potential loss of life, health or assets that could occur in a given period, determined probabilistically from the hazard, the exposure and the vulnerability of what is exposed.
