What is Geothermometer; geobarometer; exchange reaction; net-transfer reaction?

Also known as: geothermometer · geobarometer · exchange reaction · net-transfer reaction

Definition 11.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 11 — Thermobarometry and P–T–t Paths

A geothermometer (geobarometer) is an equilibrium among minerals whose position depends mainly on temperature (pressure), so that the compositions of the minerals give the temperature (pressure) of their last equilibrium. An exchange reaction swaps two elements between two minerals, such as iron and magnesium between garnet and biotite, without creating or destroying either mineral. A net-transfer reaction makes some minerals at the expense of others.
