什么是 Grounding line; calving?

又称: grounding line · calving

Definition 24.11 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 24 章 — Glaciology

The grounding line is the line where ice resting on its bed begins to float: seaward of it the ice is an ice shelf or a floating glacier tongue. Calving is the breaking off of blocks of ice, icebergs, at the front of a glacier or an ice shelf that ends in water.

A schematic section of a marine ice sheet, not to scale. The ice rests on a bed below sea level, which deepens inland; at the grounding line it begins to float, as an ice shelf, which loses ice by calving at its front and by melting from below. The drag on the shelf where it is held at its sides and on rises of the sea floor resists the flow of the grounded ice.
