Hummocky cross-stratification is a stratification of fine sand in gently curved laminae, concave-up (swales) and convex-up (hummocks), that cut one another at low angles and thicken and thin laterally, over wavelengths of a metre to several metres. It is formed by the oscillating and combined flows of storm waves, between the fair-weather and the storm wave base.
