A lahar is a fast-moving mixture of water and volcanic debris that flows down a river valley, with the consistency of anything from muddy water to wet concrete. Lahars form when pyroclastic currents melt snow and ice, when heavy rain falls on loose volcanic deposits, when a lake dammed by volcanic deposits breaks out, or from a debris avalanche.
