The lithosphere is the rigid outer shell of the Earth: the crust and the uppermost, coldest part of the mantle, which together break into the tectonic plates and do not flow. The asthenosphere is the layer of the mantle beneath the lithosphere, hotter and weaker, which flows slowly over long spans of time, like a very stiff paste.
