什么是 Magnetostratigraphy?

Definition 4.20 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 4 章 — Geomagnetism and Palaeomagnetism

Magnetostratigraphy is the subdivision of a sequence of rocks into polarity zones, intervals of uniform normal or reversed polarity, and the dating of the sequence by matching its pattern of zones with that of the geomagnetic polarity timescale.

A magnetostratigraphic correlation: the polarity zones of an invented section (black, normal; white, reversed) matched with the polarity timescale between 3.8 and 2.3\, Ma. The dashed lines join each reversal boundary to its age.
