Map algebra is the computation of a new raster layer cell by cell from one or more layers of the same grid: by arithmetic (the NDVI from two bands), by comparison (the cells steeper than $15{}^{\circ}$ ), by logical operations (and, or, not), or from a neighbourhood of the cell (the slope).
