What is Mean square of weighted deviates?

Definition 13.14 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 13 — Advanced Geochronology

The mean square of weighted deviates (MSWD) of nn measurements about a fitted model with pp adjusted parameters is

MSWD=1n−p∑i(xi−x^i)2σi2,\mathrm{MSWD} = \frac{1}{n - p}\sum_i \frac{(x_i - \hat x_i)^2}{\sigma_i^2},

where x^i\hat x_i is the model value: p=1p = 1 for a weighted mean, p=2p = 2 for a straight line such as an isochron or a discordia.
