What is Metamorphic series; paired metamorphic belts?

Also known as: metamorphic series · paired metamorphic belts

Definition 11.10 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 11 — Thermobarometry and P–T–t Paths

A metamorphic series (or facies series) is a sequence of metamorphic facies developed under the same range of ratios of pressure to temperature, and therefore occupying a radial sector of the pressure–temperature plane. Paired metamorphic belts are two parallel belts of the same age, one of high-pressure series and one of low-pressure series.

Three geothermal gradients from a surface at 10\, C, converted to pressure with a mean density of 2800\, kg\, m-3, over the experimental Al2SiO5 diagram (grey). The cold gradient stays in the kyanite field, the intermediate one passes from kyanite to sillimanite, the hot one crosses the andalusite field before it reaches sillimanite.
